Choice of a suitable detergent for your research and work is often a complex task. Take the study of membrane proteins as example. A detergent can dissolve the membrane protein, but it does not mean that the protein will maintain its original conformation or remain stable in the detergent; A detergent that can effectively stabilize membrane proteins may not be suitable for subsequent protein purification and crystallization. Furthermore, a detergent that works for one type of membrane protein may not work for another. Since there is no set of so-called "golden rules" to guide the selection of detergents, the choice of detergent still remains largely a matter of trial-and-error approach.
